We treat a recipe as a governed asset with an owner, an environment, a release path and a defined failure behaviour — so the platform ends up replacing the scripts nobody can find, not adding to them. RecipesEnvironmentsGovernanceError handling The problem ## Anyone who can drag a connector ships an *integration.* That speed is why the platform was bought, and it works. A year in, the same freedom means nobody can say which recipes the business depends on, which are somebody's abandoned experiment, and which one is quietly writing to the CRM every four minutes. ## Recipes are *assets*. Workato What we do ## What governance looks like here. ### Recipes with owners Every recipe named, described and assigned to a team that answers for it, held in folders that follow the business rather than whoever happened to build it. An integration without a named owner is an outage waiting for a volunteer. ### Environments and release Development, test and production kept apart, with connections and lookup tables parameterised so a promotion does not carry someone's sandbox credentials into production. Changes ship as a release, not as an edit to a live recipe. ### Error handling and replay Explicit error paths, jobs that stop rather than half-write, and a replay route for the records a downstream outage rejected. The default behaviour of a failed job is the most important design decision in the build. ### Connection and access model Shared service connections owned centrally instead of a personal OAuth token that expires when someone leaves. Access is scoped to what a builder is allowed to touch, which is also what makes citizen building safe. ### A build standard people can follow Naming, logging, error conventions and a pattern library so a recipe written by one team is legible to another. Review before production, in writing, with a checklist rather than a taste judgement. ### Cost and task discipline Polling intervals, batch sizes and duplicate triggers watched, because task consumption grows quietly and then arrives as a renewal conversation. We tune the recipes that account for most of it before anyone renegotiates a contract. How it runs ## Catalogue, standard, build, operate. 01 ### Catalogue Every existing recipe listed with its trigger, its systems, its owner and whether anything still depends on it. Most of this exercise is deciding what to switch off. 02 ### Standard The build standard and the governance model written down: who can build, what needs review, what a recipe must log, and how a change reaches production. 03 ### Build The integrations the business depends on rebuilt to that standard, with error paths and replay treated as part of the scope rather than a later hardening pass. 04 ### Operate Monitoring on jobs and on the business outcome, a runbook for the errors that recur, and time alongside your team until they are running releases without us. Where it usually breaks ## The error queue nobody has *open.* Recipes are built by the team that needed them and monitored by nobody. A connection expires, a field is renamed, a downstream API starts rejecting a record, and the jobs fail into a queue no one has open. The data stops moving days before anyone notices, and the recovery is manual because replay was never designed in.
